Responding to the urgent needs of internally displaced people in Gao

Internally displaced people escaped harrowing violence in Talataye, Mali. MSF teams are providing assistance, documented in photos and stories below.

1700 people arrived from Talataye

On September 10, 2022, more than 1,700 people arrived in Gao, northern Mali, following violent attacks on their villages in Talataye. They settled at the Soso Koira site where they had no necessities and families had to build their own shelters. MSF teams intervened to support people by setting up clean water facilities, mobile clinics, a medical tent, and by distributing nonfood item kits (NFIs) and shelter kits.

Supporting their installation

Wooden beams were made available for the construction of tents at the Talataye IDP site in Gao. The IDPs began setting up their tents using non-food kits provided by MSF. Teams from MSF actively participated in the construction of the tents.

Offering kits

Non-food kits consisting of cooking utensils, mats, tarps, blankets, buckets, etc. were distributed to facilitate the installation. The shelter kits consisted of 6 wooden poles, 1 25-meter rope, 1 tarp and 3 bamboo poles. The non-food kits each included 3 loincloths, 1 container with a capacity of 40 liters, 8 pieces of soap of 100g, 5 plastic plates, 1 plastic tarp, 2 mosquito nets, 1 rope of 25 meters, 5 spoons, 1 blanket, 1 ladle, 2 pans and 1 plastic mat of 1 place

MSF teams delivered a water tank to the site so that people at the site have access to clean drinking water.

Deploying a mobile clinic

Once the installation was complete, MSF teams in Gao prepared to set-up the mobile clinic. Medicines were loaded into the ambulance and medical teams were mobilized to provide free primary health care.

Setting up a medical tent

Before the ambulance arrived, our teams on the ground already set up the medical tent that will accommodate patients from the IDP families. The tent has been equipped with consultation materials, staff and medicines.

The mobile clinic has provided free care, mainly to women and children. All families were able to benefit from free consultations in the mobile clinic set up at the Soso Koira site.

Proximity is our asset

MSF teams went to meet the IDP families in Talataye to learn more about their needs. During group discussions, families shared their concerns and expressed the need for more assistance, particularly in terms of food, shelter and protection.

Our impact in numbers

MSF teams were the first humanitarian actors to intervene with the Talataye IDPs in the Soso Koira site in Gao. Our interventions are still ongoing as of April 2023.
