Kyrgyzstan shares its 4,512-km-long border with four countries – Kazakhstan to the north, China to the east, Tajikstan to the south, and Uzbekistan to the west. Over the past 12 years, more than 300 conflicts have occurred in its border regions – caused by disputes over water, over pasture land and over undefined territory. In such conflicts, those who suffer most are the ordinary people who live in border areas.

Since August 2022, an MSF medical team based in Razzakov has been helping to increase access to emergency medical care in the Leilek district of Batken region, near the border with Tadjikistan The team has been supporting the Ministry of Health to integrate international standards of triage and emergency care into the main hospitals’ mass casualty plans. Meanwhile, MSF mental health experts have focused on improving the mental health preparedness of communities living close to the border, while MSF water and sanitation engineers have made improvements to infrastructure in local health facilities.
